While it’s a known fact that dozens of ships have sunk near the western shoreline of Lake Michigan, many tourists don’t realize there is a massive underwater shipwreck graveyard near the shores of Sheboygan. Blue Harbor Resort & Conference Center, unlike most hotels in Sheboygan Wisconsin, rests on the scenic shores of Lake Michigan. Tourists from Milwaukee, Chicago, and Green Bay flock to our lakefront haven to spend an equally restful and exciting weekend in one of our 180 guest rooms and 64 villas. Our breathtaking location will become even more enticing in the coming years as our shores will soon be a National Marine Sanctuary.
National Marine Sanctuaries
There have been at least nine known and documented shipwrecks from 18487 to 1922 near Sheboygan. This number is likely higher as the National Marine Sanctuary Wisconsin chapter believes there are potentially dozens more near our shores and further out to sea. There is a proposed plan to designate 1,075 square miles of western Lake Michigan water as a “sanctuary.” Currently, there are approximately 37 known shipwrecks (and counting) from Two Rivers through Sheboygan and down to Port Washington. Officials believe there are at least 90 more potential shipwreck sites in this region. By designating these waters as a sanctuary, the state of Wisconsin would help conserve, protect, and enhance public access to this collection of shipwrecks. The proposal would boost tourism, increase economic development, and further education.
Scuba Diving in Lake Michigan
Currently, two notable scuba diving companies in our region allow tourists to visit shipwrecks. Port Deco Divers, based in Port Washington, periodically dives in Sheboygan during the summer months. Be sure to check their calendar because their scuba trips are infrequent. Luckily for us, however, they launch from Deland Park 1 1/2 miles up the road. We are one of the closest hotels in Sheboygan Wisconsin to the park. Port Deco visits the Walter B. Allen (1866) and Silver Lake (1889) wreckage sites on these scuba trips. Shipwreck Adventures in Two Rivers also hosts “Wreck Dives” all over the region. It’s important to note that all underwater excursions are for experienced divers only. Both Port Deco and Shipwreck Adventures offer certified training and equipment for purchase.
